Exersaucer vs walker - help baby learn to walk?

I have made some findings from the web on whether exersaucer or walker can help baby learn to walk?

Surprisingly, none of them has the function to help baby learn to walk.


Baby learn to walk by watching and understanding how their foot and legs move. Therefore it might delay baby learning on walking if the exersaucer or walker has a tray that block their sight on the movement of their legs and foot.

Some people are against using walker because they are more dangerous compared to exersaucer.

Yu Ming: My first soft toy

This is my first soft toy, his name is Jolly Wolf, I love him so much... I always 'sayang' him by giving him a lot of hugs and kisses.

Actually Jolly Wolf is belonged to my mommy, a gift from daddy to mommy last 2 years which he bought during his business trip.

New toys arrived today... play saucer

Yu Ming has new toys arrived today... we bought these toys through online shop last Friday, but there is still 1 item pending for shipment because of out of stock.

Quite a big parcel...

BS assembled our little one's new toy, it is "Bright Starts Bounce Bounce Baby" play saucer or it often referred as exersaucers (Note: exersaucer is a brand name for Evenflo's play saucer).

What is BPA?

What is BPA? I found that more and more baby products nowadays are promoting themselves as BPA free product, but what BPA is about? I have made some searching through the web and made a summary below:



BPA (Bisphenol-A) is a type of industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate plastic, epoxy resins and other products. If our food container which is made from polycarbonate plastic, the rate of BPA leaching into our food and drink will be increased when:

• Heating or pouring hot liquid on to containers
• Presence of acidic foods and beverages in the containers
• Repeated washing on the containers

BPA may lead to some negative health effects which includes prostate & breast cancer, obesity and neurological issue.

Baby Bjorn Potty Chair

Finally I've made up my mind to buy Baby Bjorn Potty Chair. I have made the order through online shopping and now waiting for the its arrival. I purchased the potty chair from LittleWhiz.com for the on sale price of RM134.10 (Normal price:RM149), hopefully to receive the item by next week.

Potty - which one to buy?

We start to look into potty training for our little boy and there are variety designs and size available in the market. I have 2 favorites in my mind, both are chair type:


1. Baby Bjorn Potty Chair

• Variety of colors.
• Removable inner potty (easy to clean).
• High back support and comfortable arm rests.
• The best or overall winner for potty chairs from the reviews.

2. Fisher Price Stepstool Potty

• Royal blue color.
• Plays musical tunes as a rewards for the potty progress.
• Can be attached to a regular toilet seat.
• Can be converted to a step stool.
• Removable inner potty (easy to clean).
• Comes with shield.

Yu Ming: My first little lantern

22nd Sept 2010 which is also 15th day on the 8th month of Chinese Lunar Calendar is the 2010 Mid Autumn Festival day. To celebrate this festival, we bought a battery operated small dragonfly lantern for little Yu Ming. We bought the lantern from a fruits stall in Selasih, Kulim (near to our stay place) for only RM4. This would be the first lantern for our cute little boy although he yet to understand the meaning of the festival.

Yu Ming is trying to hold the lantern but he will put everything in his hand towards his mouth, therefore we need to be extra careful when he was holding his lantern. He seem like bored after sometimes mostly because he was too small to appreciate the lantern festival.

Mid Autumn Festival - 中秋节

Mid Autumn Festival (in Chinese - 中秋节) also referred as moon cake festival or lantern festival in Malaysia, it held on every 15th day on the 8th month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. For this year (2010), the mid autumn festival fall on 22nd September.

During this time, children will walk around the street with their colorful lanterns, sometimes there will be event organized by the school and even kinder-garden to celebrate this festival. Shopping mall and markets (in Malay - pasar) will start to sell variety sweet or savory fillings of mooncakes and also variety shape and pattern of colorful lanterns. Traditional lantern is made of paper and need candle to light up but nowadays more and more battery operated plastic lanterns are widely available.

We bought a battery operated small dragonfly shaped lantern for our 4th months boy as his first lantern although he yet to know how to play.


Most people will start to buy moon cakes as a gift to their family or work peers as a appreciation to the celebration. Nowadays moon cakes had been packaged in beautiful boxes or special gift boxes to attract more customer and it has been a tough competition between the manufacturers every year.

pillow & bolster

Little Yu Ming has 2 small baby bolsters plus 5 small baby pillows and one of them is a dimple pillow. All of them are filled with cotton specially made by his granny for our little one.

Little Yu Ming likes to sniff or smell his pillows and bolster since he was around 2 months plus... When he was crying, the best short term method to calm him down is to give him the pillow and he'll hug , smell and thus will be quiet for quite some time.

He likes to suck his pacifier and hugging his pillow/bolster to sleep and most of the times even put the pillow against his face. Maybe he feels comfortable and secured when hugging and smelling the pillow/bolster.

Yesterday when he was hugging his bolster, I lay beside him and grabbed his bolster and put it on my left arm. He turned his head to look at me and then grabbed back his bolster. This repeated for a few times and it was so funny to see his helpless face when I was again and again grabbed his bolster... :)

4th month Checkup

Our baby went to government clinic today for 4th month checkup. Actually for government clinic there is no vaccination jab scheduled for 4th month baby. The appointment is just for baby's weight and long measurement and also consultation.

Baby cot toys

We bought 2 musical cot toys for little Coby, one of them is the mobile cot toy. Baby develop senses and learning through the stimulation from his environment. Cot toys can stimulate baby's senses and at the mean time entertain baby with lovely lullaby music.

Pneumococcal vaccine

Yu Ming was taken his first dose of Pneumococcal vaccine today together with Rotavirus vaccine. Pneumococcal vaccine can protects against Pneumococcal disease which includes ear infection, sinus infection, meningitis, pneumonia and bacteremia. There are total 4 doses if the baby is given the first dose before 6 months old. Different ages will required different doses.

The vaccine is quite pricey but it is advisable to take this vaccine as the Pneumococcal disease is very common nowadays. According to the WHO, estimated one child dies of Pneumococcal disease every minute.

The price for 1 dose is RM250 but luckily the manufacturer is giving 3 doses free 1 dose promotion. So the total would be RM750 for all the 4 doses.

Rotavirus Vaccine - Rotateq

For Yu Ming's first year, we plan to let him to take the vaccination which is subsidized by government clinic and additionally 2 other optional vaccination from private clinic. The 2 optional vaccinations are Rota virus vaccine and Pneumococcal vaccine.

For Rotavirus, Yu Ming was administered Rotateq orally during his 2 months and 4 months old. There are total 3 doses of Rotateq and we plan for him to take the third or last dose when he is 6 months old.

For Rotateq, 3 doses are needed to be administered orally to infants, advisable that first dose is taken during 6-12 week of age and each of the 3 doses must administered at least 4 weeks apart.

Rotavirus Vaccine can protects against gastroenteritis which may cause diarrhea, fever and vomiting.

Mosquito kisses

Mosquito likes to bite Yu Ming especially during night time. Today Yu Ming has 5 mosquito kisses on his face, he didn't sleep on his baby cot covered with mosquito net last night. Pity our little boy, we noticed sometimes he was trying to rub his face due to the itchiness of the mosquito bites.

Do you know that only female mosquitoes bite and there is a reason why they need blood. Female mosquito needs the proteins in the fresh blood to produce eggs.

Baby Car Seat

We bought a convertible car seat for our little boy, he loves it and even slept on it during the first time ride on his car seat for a 20 minutes journey.

There are a few types of car seats in the market which include the infant car seat (can also used as a carrier), convertible car seat and booster car seat. Infant car seat usually is for baby less than 6 months and it is only rear facing and booster car seat is for toddler and it is only forward facing.

Convertible car seat can used by baby/infant for rear facing and toddler for forward facing. The baby's weight for rear facing and forward facing is vary by the car seat model. For our baby car seat, although its spec stated that it can support up to 18 Kg, but it is only supporting rear facing for weight less than 10kg. Rear facing could offer the best protection for baby and should be used as long as possible until the limit of the car seat.

Mommy's birthday

For my birthday dinner, BS brought me to a restaurant which is located at Upper Penang Road. Smoky Jack Ribs and Steak House is using recycling concept in his interior design and I like the cocoon chairs that made it so unique and special. 7th month of Lunar Calendar

Today is my birthday, BS plan to celebrate my birthday by having dinner at one of the restaurant in Penang island. At first, we planned to take Coby together but by considering today is in the 7th month of Chinese Lunar calendar, we think that it would be better by not bringing Coby together for the dinner. Some people were saying that little baby who is still under 1 year old are not encouraged to go out at night during the 7th month of Lunar Calendar as this month is also referred as "Hungry Ghost Month". Anyway, I could said that no harm for us to be so superstitious just to avoid any unwanted or unlucky incident happen to our baby boy.

3 months + now

Yu Ming is 3 months plus now and he still having only 4 Oz of milk for every 3 hours. His granny said he is like a small alarm clock because he sure will alarm us by crying out loud every 3 hours for his milk. Sometimes we'll give him 5Oz of milk if he overslept and the feeding time had been delayed for more than half an hour.

Yu Ming's 3 months - Drooling & Gnawing

Little Yu Ming likes to suck his hand since he was 1 month plus old. We bought a teething water filled toys when he was 2 months old but he still do not know how to hold the teething toy properly and to gnaw it. Now at 3 months old, he start to drool more often and when he start to enjoying his hand biting and gnawing, his saliva will be all over his face.

First mother's day and father's day

This year (2010) is our first time celebrating mother's and father's day :P. Mother's day fell on 9th May and I was still doing my confinement, therefore we have to push out the mother's day celebration to 10th June. Coby was left at home with his grandpa and granny while his beloved papa and mommy went to G Hotel Penang to had their international buffet dinner at the GCaf.

For father's day celebration, we also need to push out the date to 30th June because BS was working on that day (20th June). 30th June is also BS's birthday and we enjoyed the 2 in 1 celebration dinner at Kampachi restaurant for authentic Japanese cuisine.

Jaundice (Hyperbilirubinemia)

Yu Ming was detected having Jaundice on the third day with Bilirubin reading at 244 and he was sent for photo therapy treatment for the whole night. Next morning, Yu Ming's Bilirubin reading has dropped to 177 but the pediatrician advised us to continue the photo therapy until 5pm and we only discharged from the hospital after the treatment.

On Yu Ming's 5th day, we noticed that he seemed so listless and hardly woke up all the time. We decided to go to the nearest government clinic on the next day (6th day) to do the Bilirubin blood test and the result was shocking us as the reading had increased again to 212. The nurse told us that government hospital will only accept the admission for the photo therapy if the reading is reaching 250 points and ask us to come back again to do the blood test on the second day. We was worried and decided to go back to Island hospital for the photo therapy and again Yu Ming had spent another night of photo therapy treatment in the hospital. The Bilirubin reading dropped to 127 on the next morning and we felt so relieved and also noticed that our boy had became more energetic and active after the treatment.
