Mid Autumn Festival (in Chinese - 中秋节) also referred as moon cake festival or lantern festival in Malaysia, it held on every 15th day on the 8th month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. For this year (2010), the mid autumn festival fall on 22nd September.
During this time, children will walk around the street with their colorful lanterns, sometimes there will be event organized by the school and even kinder-garden to celebrate this festival. Shopping mall and markets (in Malay - pasar) will start to sell variety sweet or savory fillings of mooncakes and also variety shape and pattern of colorful lanterns. Traditional lantern is made of paper and need candle to light up but nowadays more and more battery operated plastic lanterns are widely available.
We bought a battery operated small dragonfly shaped lantern for our 4th months boy as his first lantern although he yet to know how to play.
Most people will start to buy moon cakes as a gift to their family or work peers as a appreciation to the celebration. Nowadays moon cakes had been packaged in beautiful boxes or special gift boxes to attract more customer and it has been a tough competition between the manufacturers every year.
